Bedzy and
Beguidy

Colin Gee

Born blind and not big talkers
Bedzy and Beguidy
twins
some say brothers
murdered a priest in Oh Eight
pilgrims in white manta
bone beads
twin braids
eyes without pupils to look
cheekbones like ridgelines
shoulderblades pickaxed
crow handled
arrows that fall silently from the trees
one mule between them
spliced rope huaraches
machetes maromas
matracas
harbingers of the christless
knucklebrowed American sphynx
had to go up the mountain
seek the jaguar in his lair
speak fire to the rock
bury the hatchets in the holy grotto
the woodcutters call Ratsy
fumble through the passes
shiver and burn
call the jaguar from the cloud
call the jaguar from the claw of the backhoe
where he leapt
like razorgrass from the fissure
once a man
and tumbled from the sky a paper dragon
unleashing fury on the pueblo
where it cowered in a bunker
improvised at the grade school
I had to go back out into the tornado
I had left my wallet in the truck
passed them at the fire doors
Bedzy and Beguidy
entering crablike with milkwhite eyes
reeking of the dark
tomahawk noses
There are those men
said the girl
Get them away from me
shivering and groping for a
for a door in the wall
But no one could stop them.
